Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have requested to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism left him speechless and required to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
