European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
