The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
