Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
